Hood Canal Brewery opened its doors in September 1996 in
an 800 sq. ft. pole building at the home of Don Wyatt, owner
and brewer, just north of Poulsbo, Washington. Don had five
years experience home brewing and worked at The Thomas Kemper
Brewery for a few months. When Kemper's closed its doors
he decided to follow his passion and open his own brewery.
Distribution
of Hood Canal Beers started in Kitsap County. When business
started growing Don hired a distributor for the area. He
later expanded his sales to the Seattle area and now he
personally distributes to bars, pubs and grocery stores
on the Kitsap and in the greater Seattle area.
All of the brews have been named after locations around
Hood Canal. They include: Agate Pass Amber, Dabob Bay IPA,
Dosewallips Special Ale, Southpoint Porter, Big Beef Oatmeal
Stout, and Briedablik Barley Wine.
In
summer of 2003 Don decided to expand to add a tasting room
with retail sales. After remodeling a space in an industrial
park just south of Kingston he opened his doors on August
15. With the expansion came the hiring of additional workers,
ending his time as a one-man business.
At the new location, Don and his staff offer tours of the
brewery, tastings, and retail sales. They offer 4 ounce
tasters and pints in the tasting room, and sell six-packs,
22 ounce bottles, half-gallon growlers, pony and full kegs,
as well as logo pint glasses and t-shirts.
